LVE's saturday sinopedia: an introduction

To the foreigner who is new to the ways of the country, China offers a wealth of daily details that are quirky, odd and, at times, down-right bizarre. I would love to share the ever-expanding list that I have been keeping in my trusty little moleskine, and have decided that there is far too much for one post.
