career discovery

"I prefer to call it 'Career Discovery'."

A friend developed a new way to refer to the drudgery that is the 'Job Hunt' and I quite like it. It makes it sound fun and exciting when it can tend to be anything but.

And as I find myself overwhelmed with the desire to acquire that dream job - as well as the pressure to find it soon - I try to find new ways to get excited about it again. I've been at it for some time now and it's not getting any easier.

But I think I've been going about it the wrong way. Just sending my resume to countless prospective employers doesn't seem to be cutting it. I don't know them or anyone who knows them and they certainly don't know me from Adam (or Eve, as the case may be).

I am beginning to realize the value of networking. This realization is not exactly the best of news to someone who is shy. I'd much rather wait for someone to come find me. But it doesn't work that way does it? I have to put myself out there, talk to people and work it. Fun times.

But surprisingly, it has been fun times. On Wednesday night I joined my friend Barbara at an event with the World Affairs Council of Houston. It was a talk about Tomorrow's Middle East with journalist Robin Wright.

What really struck me, however, was the networking doors that it could open. So many interesting people ready to talk! How perfect, right? Anyway, I'll be returning. Who knows what could come of it?

And the Career Discovery portion of this Job Hunt begins now.
