the not so lucky
I wrote in my last post that most of the craziness that the hurricane had caused had died down. Well, that may be true for me; I have my power, water and still intact home - and what are a few piles of branches and debris that STILL haven't been removed from our sidewalk when we are so lucky in every other respect.
Others were not so lucky. I know people who have had to move out of their apartments because they were completely destroyed the night of the storm. Days after Ike, one of my managers jokingly said that she had a waterfall installed in her bedroom. In the middle of the night of the storm she was woken up by water pouring down from her ceiling.
It wasn't a big inconvenience until her apartment complex asked her to move out of her bedroom so they could fix her roof. Sleeping in the living room wasn't so bad, but the other day she had to go into her bedroom to get something. Her room was unrecognizable. The workers had torn down the walls. As a result, anyone who so desires can waltz into her apartment and take whatever they want.
Needless to say, she's looking for another place to live.
So, some were lucky and others had their entire lives turned upside-down. It's going to take a while for Houston, Galveston and all other affected areas to go completely back to normal.
